The bridge is one of my favorite places to add hidden details to an engagement ring, especially if you're trying to keep the top view clean and timeless. It's a small bar, usually about 2 millimeters thick, that sits just beneath the head setting and is only visible from the sides. Because it's tucked out of sight, the bridge gives you the opportunity to add personality without changing the classic look of a solitaire. Whether it's an intricate design, hidden diamonds, or a meaningful detail, it's one of the most versatile parts of the ring to customize.
What Is the Bridge?
The bridge is the small bar directly beneath the head setting of an engagement ring. It's one of the best places to add hidden details because it offers something many other parts of the ring don't: space. Whether you're adding hand engravings, hidden diamonds, or an organic design, the engraver or diamond setter needs enough room to work. At about 2 millimeters thick, the bridge provides just enough surface to make those details possible. Since it ends where the cathedral begins, it also gives you additional horizontal space to create designs that wouldn't fit anywhere else.
Gems and Diamonds on the Bridge
The most popular option is adding gems or diamonds directly onto the bridge. My personal favorite is prong setting them in between a border. It gives a really clean look, but more importantly, it feels smooth when you run your fingers across it and when you wear the ring every day. And if you want to sprinkle in some Art Deco character, you can add milgrain dots along the borders.
Hand Engraving vs. CAD Engraving
If you want a full Art Deco design instead, the bridge can carry a scroll pattern or a flower mural. These are done in one of two ways, and each gives a different look.
- Hand engraving: Done entirely by hand by a skilled artisan. It creates crisp, clean lines with a natural contrast between the engraved details and the polished metal. No two hand engravings are exactly alike, giving each ring its own character.
- CAD engraving: Designed in 3D software and cast directly into the ring. This works especially well for organic designs, like the floral and sage leaf pattern we created for one client, because it produces a more precise and uniform look.
Taking It Further: The Bridge Mural
That same 3D software lets us take the bridge a step further by turning the entire structure into a custom design, or what I like to call a bridge mural. Instead of decorating the bridge, the bridge itself becomes the design.
We've created floral motifs and Filipino sun motifs for clients, and right now we're working on a koi fish motif. It's one of the most challenging designs we've attempted because every part of the bridge still has to do its job while also looking like a koi fish. We're still figuring it out, and honestly, that's part of the fun. Every new design pushes us to solve a problem we haven't solved before.
